North Van RCMP seeking witnesses to arsons after suspect arrested

NORTH VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — Police in North Vancouver think the same man is responsible for a series of arsons near City Hall and Lonsdale Quay last Thursday.

A newspaper box and a garbage can on Lonsdale Avenue went up in flames in the span of about five minutes. Later that day, two dumpsters and an air conditioner were burned closer to the shore.

Mounties say the five fires occurred between 12:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 15.

In a statement released Monday, police say a man has been arrested. He is known to police.

“Investigators have developed grounds to believe that this person is responsible for all of these fires,” Sgt. Peter DeVries says.

However investigators are still looking for witnesses, particularly the people who helped to put out the first fire.

“We’re hoping to get in touch with those three individuals, to see if they were able to provide any information about who might have been responsible for those fires.” he says.

Anyone with information or footage regarding the fires in asked to contact the North Vancouver RCMP Major Crimes unit at 604-969-7572.
