Toronto police are investigating an alleged gunfight that took place Friday afternoon in a busy area in the east end.

Police responded to reports of shots fired just before 2:00 p.m. on Durnford Road, near Hwy. 401 and Sheppard Avenue.

Investigators believe a fight broke out between two groups at the rear of Rouge Valley Public School, and they then got into their cars where at least one person began firing shots at the other vehicle.

At least four rounds were fired in the direction of the school, which is also home to a daycare. Police say at least 30 children were in the building at the time of the shooting, however, no injuries were reported.

Two other rounds were found in the bedroom of a townhouse across the street.

“In the blink of an eye, people’s lives could have been ended here – children’s lives could have been ended,” said Duty Inspector Ishmail Musah. “This, in its worst case scenario, would have been horrific.”

Police have not said how many suspects they are looking for at this time and have yet to release any suspect descriptions. They are appealing for anyone with information or dashcam footage to contact them.
