The Extinction Rebellion protest blocked the Burrard Street Bridge for just over two hours

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — A climate protest organized by Extinction Rebellion closed the Burrard Street Bridge in Vancouver for over two hours Saturday.

Beginning at around 3 p.m., approximately 40 people blocked the intersection of Burrard Street and Cornwall Avenue, at the southern end of the Bridge.

In a statement released by the Vancouver Police Department, Constable Tania Visintin says the protest caused major traffic disruptions in both directions.

“VPD negotiators warned the group several times that they would be arrested if they continued to block access to the bridge.”

Visintin confirms that 12 people were arrested for “intimidation by blocking a roadway.”

Police say those arrested will likely be released to appear in court at a future date.
