VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — Some members of North Shore Rescue spent their night on Vancouver Island Saturday, after a rescue kept them out late.
Team Lead Mike Danks says they were called out to help a pair of stuck hikers just below the summit of Golden Hinde, in the Strathcona Park area on Vancouver Island.
He realized they would be stuck out late, so they tried to book a hotel room, to no avail — that’s when Campbell River SAR stepped in to help.

“[We] started phoning around to different hotels in Campbell River and there was absolutely nothing that was available. So we reached out and they were gracious enough to open up some of their own homes to our members. So they were very fortunate.”
Situations like this remind Danks of bond between SAR teams.
“It really highlights that we’re all in the same volunteer business of helping people, and it’s really nice when we can help each other.”
Danks says the crew members who stayed on the island overnight will be back in Vancouver Sunday, while a few members were back in action on the North Shore later Saturday as a woman had a possible ankle fracture.
