IHIT investigating death of one-year-old in New Westminster

NEW WESTMINSTER (NEWS 1130) – Homicide investigators have been called in after the death of a one-year-old child in New Westminster.

Few details have been released, but police say they were called to a report of an unresponsive toddler at a home on 5th Ave. near 13th St. at about 4:20 a.m. Saturday. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) was called in due to “suspicious circumstances around the death.”

IHIT says investigators are speaking with family and friends to determine what happened. The New Westminster Police Department’s Forensic Identification Section and BC Coroners Service are also working on the case.

“The hurt caused by these kind of deaths are amplified when the victim is so young,” said Sgt. David Lee with IHIT. “We are working diligently to find answers to help the healing process for all those affected.”
