Port Coquitlam commercial building damaged by early morning fire

PORT COQUITLAM (NEWS 1130) – A commercial building that was vacant and slated for demolition was badly damaged by an early morning fire in Port Coquitlam.

Crews were called to the area of Kingsway Avenue, between Maple and Gately avenues, after midnight Tuesday for reports of a second-floor and roof fire.

“Sadly, the fire extended into the tar and gravel roof,” explained Fire Chief Robert Kipps, who added the location of the flames created challenges for crews.

The fire forced some road closures along Kingsway, with crews expected to remain on scene into the afternoon.

Few details, including what may have caused the fire, are available at this time. However, Kipps says it is believed to be suspicious.

“The whole place was fenced, there’s no power or gas, so at that point if there is a fire in that location it is suspicious,” he told NEWS 1130.

No injuries have been reported.

Kingsway remains blocked in both directions between Maple and Gately.
