Wildfire in Mission forces 66 people from their homes

MISSION (NEWS 1130) – Dozens of people were forced from their homes due to a wildfire in Mission’s Fraser River Heritage Park.

The fire broke out shortly after 10:30 a.m. Tuesday on Heritage Mountain. The city says the fire was moving quickly and 66 people left their homes as a result.

Those people have since been allowed back into their homes, but they need to be ready to leave again overnight if the fire flares back up.

“We had about 28 crew from Mission, with a support crew brought out from Maple Ridge, and then we had the helicopter from the Coastal Fire Centre,” Claire Seeley with the city said.

The fire was fairly small, at an estimated 8,000 square meters. Crews are spending the night making sure there are no hot spots.

The park is closed until further notice. People are asked to stay away from the park and not fly drones overhead.

The fire danger rating is listed as extreme at all regional parks in Metro Vancouver.
