Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole announces first promise in Quebec

MONTREAL — Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole says he wants to financially support the creation of a Quebec research and development centre on food self-sufficiency in Sainte-Hyacinthe, southeast of Montreal.
O’Toole continued his summer tour today ahead of the federal election with a stop on a farm in Quebec’s main agricultural production area.
He says food security and self-sufficiency are primordial for Canadians, adding that the pandemic is the perfect occasion to look into improving the industry.
The Conservative party wants the new centre to reduce imports and dependence on foreign foods while ensuring the production and consumption of local products.
O’Toole told reporters he did not want the start of an electoral campaign while a COVID-19 fourth wave is emerging in Canada, but says he is ready if Prime Minister Justin Trudeau decides otherwise.
Conservative candidate for Sainte-Hyacinthe André Lepage says the announcement made today shows the party’s commitment to the region.
