METCHOSIN (NEWS 1130) — West Shore Mounties are commending staff at a summer camp on Vancouver Island whose actions stopped a man from trying to make off with a child Wednesday morning.

RCMP say the man rolled into the site at Pearson College in Metchosin around 8 a.m. and attempted to bolt with the seven-year-old boy.

The man was not on the approved list for pick up and was trying to leave in a silver SUV with the child.

Camp staff attempted to block the man, with one of them using their own vehicle to block his way.

Police eventually arrived and arrested the 46-year-old Sooke resident, who does know the child, but isn’t a parent.

The seven-year-old wasn’t hurt.

Sgt. Raj Sandhu is applauding the staffs’ actions adding, “This enabled our officers to respond quickly and appropriately, leading us to the best-case outcome, the safe and immediate recovery of the child and the arrest of the suspect.”
