Whitecaps youth player hospitalized after ‘racially motivated attack’

BURNABY (NEWS 1130) – A member of the Vancouver Whitecaps youth academy is in the hospital after he was assaulted in what the soccer club describes as a racially motivated attack.

According to the team, three players were assaulted at an outdoor gathering Saturday evening.

“One player is in hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to make a full recovery following surgery,” a statement from the club reads.

The Burnaby RCMP has confirmed to NEWS 1130 officers were called to reports of a stabbing involving a teen just after 11:30 p.m. Saturday. However, in a statement issues Monday, Mounties say they are aware of the claims from the Whitecaps that the attack was “racially motivated.”

We are aware of the allegation that racial slurs may have been used during this altercation, which will form part of our investigation as we work to determine a motive. Our investigators are actively looking at all aspects of this incident, writes Insp. Matt Toews, Officer-in-Charge of Investigative Services with Burnaby RCMP.

We know there were other witnesses at this outdoor gathering that have not yet come forward. We need to speak with anyone who may have seen or heard anything Saturday night that could assist us in establishing a motive and timeline.

The RCMP says officers were called to the area of Hastings Street and Kensington Avenue where the 17-year-old who had been stabbed was found. The teen was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

Another 17-year-old, who was found by a police dog, has been taken into custody.

Investigators add the suspect and victim don’t appear to know each other, and that the circumstances around what happened are still under investigation.

A dedicated tip line has been set up, anyone with information can call (604) 646-9522.

Whitecaps condemn racism

In the wake of the assault, the Vancouver Whitecaps have issued a statement taking a stand against racism.

“Enough is enough,” the Whitecaps’ statement reads. “We are heartbroken and sickened by the allegations and strongly condemn all forms of discrimination, racism, and hate. Such disgusting behaviour has absolutely no place in our community. We will do everything to support our players affected and urge the toughest punishment possible for those responsible.”

The club says no further comment is being provided at this time. The players involved have not been named.
