Highway 1 closed between Lytton and Spences Bridge due to mudslide

LYTTON (NEWS 1130) — Rain may have been a welcome sight in the B.C. Interior on Monday, but it also may be to blame for a mudslide that forced the closure of Highway 1 between Lytton and Spences Bridge.

The 35-kilometre stretch has been shut down in both directions. There is no alternate route.

According to DriveBC, an estimated time of reopening is not available at this time. The next update is scheduled for Wednesday morning.

Drivers are being forced to turn around just north of Hope — about 4 kilometres south of Cache Creek — because of the mudslide.

The agency had previously said a geotechnical assessment would be done at first light. It’s unclear if that assessment was done, and what information may have come from it.

This comes as the Coquihalla is closed between Hope and Merritt due to wildfire threat. Anyone trying to travel between the Lower Mainland and the Interior will have to take Highway 3 between Hope and Princeton, and Highway 5A from there to Merritt before getting back on the Coquihalla.

However, provincial officials are urging everyone to avoid non-essential travel to the Interior due to wildfires.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
