B.C.’s COVID numbers rise, 1,853 cases recorded over weekend

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — The number of COVID-19 cases continues to climb in the province, as B.C. has recorded 1,853 new COVID-19 cases over the weekend.

The province recorded 769 cases on Saturday, 581 on Sunday, and 503 on Monday.

Interior Health recorded the most new cases, with 707. Fraser Health has 531 new cases, and Vancouver Coastal Health recorded 295 new cases. Cases in Island Health continue to rise sharply, with 178 cases recorded over the weekend.

In the past three days, seven deaths from COVID-19 have been recorded, for a total of 1,814 in B.C. This includes three deaths in Interior Health and two in Island Health.

There are now 176 people hospitalized with COVID-19 in B.C., up from 159 on Friday. The number of COVID-19 patients in the ICU has also risen from 84 to 91.

There are 18 active outbreaks, including four new health-care facility outbreaks at Chilliwack General Hospital (Fraser Health), Fort St. John Hospital (Northern Health), Rose Woods Village (Interior Health) and Sunset Lodge (Island Health).

Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry has repeatedly said evidence shows being fully vaccinated greatly reduces the chances of becoming seriously ill from the virus. Between Aug. 20 – 26, the province said fully vaccinated individuals accounted for 18.2 per cent of cases.

As of Monday, 84.2 per cent of eligible British Columbians have received their first dose of a vaccine, while 76.4 per cent have received both doses.

On Wednesday, a mask mandate came back into effect in B.C. Everyone aged 12 and up is now required to wear a face covering in indoor public spaces, including on transit and BC Ferries.

On that same day, the province said daily registrations to get vaccinated nearly doubled compared to the same time last week. This comes after the province announced the implementation of a “vaccine passport” which will start on Sept. 13. One dose will be required to enter places like indoor concerts, sporting events, movies, and anywhere there is non-discretionary activities. Starting Oct. 24, only fully immunized people will be allowed in those settings.

On Monday, Alberta reported 3,056 new cases of COVID-19 over the weekend in that province, including 370 cases in children under 10.
