Man dies in second fatal fire in Lower Mainland this week

CHILLIWACK (NEWS 1130) — A man was found dead after a house fire in Chilliwack Saturday morning, making it the second fatal blaze in the Lower Mainland in under a week.

Just after 7:00 am Saturday, 35 firefighters arrived at the residence on Butchart Street, near McCaffrey Road.

The fire was “venting from a basement window” when they arrived, says a release from the City of Chilliwack Fire Department. No firefighters were injured.

“Firefighters quickly knocked the fire down, entered the single-family residential house and found a male deceased in the basement bedroom,” according to the release.

The Chilliwack blaze has been deemed accidental by fire investigators, RCMP and the BC Coroners Service.

Another body was found on Wednesday after a house fire in Coquitlam. Coquitlam RCMP say reports started coming in around 9:00 p.m. for a fire at a home along McTavish Court, near Hockaday Park.

There were others inside the home at the time who were able to escape the fire. They did not suffer any injuries and RCMP did not say what relationship they have to the victim.

No further information is being released at this time, including the identity of the deceased or the possible cause of the fire. The BC Coroners Service will take over the investigation into the cause of death.
