As food prices in Canada spike, financial expert offers tips on grocery spending

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — It’s getting harder for Canadians to feed their families as the price of food continues to rise across the country.

Statistics Canada says the consumer price index rose by 4.1 per cent in August compared to the same month last year, marking the fastest growth in nearly two decades. That impacts everything from gas to food.

To stretch your grocery budget further, financial literacy expert Linda Campbell recommends making a list before you go to the store and sticking to it. While you’re browsing, look higher and lower on the shelf for featured sales.

“When you make that grocery list, think about your meal plan. What are the ingredients and what do you need so you don’t over-buy?” she says.

It’s also important to buy in season.

“Especially when it comes to fresh vegetables and fresh fruit, for example in the fall, there are certain fresh vegetables and fresh fruit that will be lower cost,” Campbell says.

Cut out more costly options and set a max budget for yourself before you go shopping to trim back on expenses even more.

Put the newest items in the back of your fridge and move the fresher items to the front “so you can actually see what you have,” she adds.
