B.C. records 1,692 COVID-19 cases over the weekend, 11 new deaths

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – As British Columbians head to the polls Monday, the province is recording 1,692 cases of COVID-19 over the last 72 hours.

Over the three day reporting period, B.C. recorded 644 new cases on Saturday, 613 new cases on Sunday, and 435 new cases on Monday.

This comes as Fraser Health again records the most new infections, with 533. There were 239 cases confirmed in Vancouver Coastal Health, 371 new cases in Interior Health, and 343 in Northern Health. Island Health is still experiencing a rise in cases, with another 204 cases recorded.

According to the province, about 76 per cent of new cases between Sept. 10 and Sept. 16 were among people who had either only had one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine or none at all.

Hospitalizations due to COVID-19 infections are continuing to rise across the province, with 307 now admitted, compared to 298 patients on Friday. There are now 156 people are now in ICU, compared to 135 on Friday. The last time there was more 300 cases in hospital was in March, 2021.

In the past three days, 11 people have died in B.C. due to COVID-19. This includes six in Fraser Health, two in Vancouver Coastal, and three in Northern Health.

The health minister says between Sept. 2 and Sept. 15, more than 86 per cent of hospitalizations were due to people who are not fully vaccinated.

As of Monday, 86.8 per cent of eligible British Columbians are at least partly vaccinated, while 80.2 per cent have had two doses.

Last Monday, B.C.’s new vaccine passport came into effect, restricting access to certain settings to only people who can show proof of vaccination against COVID-19. Proof of at least one dose is now required in settings such as restaurants, movie theatres, and gyms. Proof of both doses is required starting Oct. 24.

Long-term care: Northcrest Care Centre, Westminster House, Menno Terrace East (Fraser Health), Arbutus Care Centre, Louis Brier Home and Hospital (Vancouver Coastal Health), Village at Mill Creek – second floor, Cottonwoods Care Centre, Brookhaven Care Centre, Spring Valley Care Centre, Kamloops Seniors Village, Hillside Village, The Hamlets at Westsyde, Joseph Creek Care Village, Overlander (Interior Health), and Jubilee Lodge (Northern Health).

Acute care: Chilliwack General Hospital (Fraser Health), Fort St. John Hospital (Northern Health), and Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital (Interior Health).

Assisted or independent living: David Lloyd Jones, Sun Pointe Village, and Hardy View Lodge (Interior Health).
