Over 6,200 doses of “magic mushrooms” seized from Surrey home

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — Nearly 30 kilograms of “magic mushrooms” were seized from a Clayton Heights home in Surrey, say Surrey RCMP.

There was enough psilocybin there to provide over 6,200 doses, say police.

Surrey Fire Services tipped off the force after they attended the home in response to a carbon monoxide alarm. There, they discovered what RCMP describe as a “psilocybin mushroom drug laboratory.”

The home is near 196 Street and 70 Avenue.

“Police obtained a search warrant and over the following two days, Surrey RCMP Drug Section along with the Clandestine Lab Enforcement and Response (CLEAR) Team conducted an investigation inside the residence,” reads the release.

“The grow operation was safely dismantled and items consistent with the production of Psilocybin mushrooms were seized.”

One woman was arrested and later released, pending investigation. No charges have been laid.

Sergeant John Murray from the Surrey RCMP Drug Unit reminds Canadians that the possession, sale, and production of magic mushrooms is illegal in Canada. Damage incurred by legal activity might not be covered by insurance either.

“There are risks when consuming illegal substances such as Psilocybin Mushrooms as they are not regulated so the potency and effects can vary significantly,” he said.

Surrey RCMP suggest property owners regularly check for illegal drug labs in the residences they oversee to avoid mold and other damage.
