Vancouver Rescued Food Market opening Friday to local families

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) —  Food that would otherwise get thrown out will soon be available to those who need it most.

The Rescued Food Market is opening its doors this Friday in Vancouver’s Olympic Village.

Carla Pellegrini is the executive director of the Food Stash Foundation (which is behind the charity). She explains, “We call it ‘rescued food’ because it’s basically slated for the trashcan and the landfill if organizations like ours didn’t come in to grab it.”

Pellegrini says her group rescues about 70,000 lbs of food from the landfill every month and then redistributes it, either to other food programs or to more than 100 families in need.

The food is sourced from grocery stores, restaurants, and farms.

And the market operates under a pay-what-you-can, no questions asked, no strings attached, business model.

“So you can use the weight of the food to gauge an appropriate donation amount if you wanted to, or you can donate whatever you feel or not donate at all,” Pellegrini explains.

“It’s really all about getting people easy access to rescued food.”

Pellegrini says donations and volunteers are always welcome too.
