Search ends for missing couple in Okanagan after ‘apparent ATV rollover’

SUMMERLAND (NEWS 1130) – The search for a missing couple in the Okanagan has come to a tragic end.

Mounties say Glen and Eva Hamakawa were found dead Sunday after “an apparent ATV rollover in dense and steep terrain.”

The 67-year-old man and his 56-year-old wife were reported missing on Friday after they failed to return from an ATV ride while camping at the Crump Recreational Site near Summerland.

Their bodies were discovered by search and rescue members.

“We are very saddened by this loss and offer sincere condolences to their friends and family,” said Staff Sgt. Bob Vatamaniuck of the Penticton RCMP. “The RCMP wishes to thanks the Search and Rescue teams for their tireless and selfless work in locating the couple, as well as the public who offered a lot of support.”

According to previous posts from search and rescue, Glen and Eva were “experienced” ATVers. However, SAR noted the pair was “new to the area,” which includes a “maze of off road trails,” and that the weather had been inclement.

“Considering the age of the couple, police are worried they may not be prepared for colder temperatures,” the RCMP’s Vatamaniuck added in a previous new release.
