Extinction Rebellion to start 14-day campaign on Vancouver streets

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — Hoping to press its demand for more action on climate change, an environmental activist group is launching a series of daily disruptions in Vancouver.
Extinction Rebellion protests have been a mainstay on the weekends in Vancouver for quite some time, but this time, the group plans to launch a 14-day campaign this Saturday with a “die-in” at Burrard Street and West Georgia Street.
Brent Eichler, from Extinction Rebellion, says the series of disruptions are designed to pressure governments to take stronger action on climate change.

“Today we’re going to be gathering in the streets, and we’re going to be performing non-violent civil disobedience, and risking arrest. And our demand is for, especially the federal government, but all levels of government and their subsidization of fossil fuels,” Eichler said.
The 14-day campaign comes ahead of the COP 26 meetings in Scotland next month, where world leaders will gather to discuss their latest steps to try to keep climate change in check.
Eichler says while their demonstrations will affect drivers in Vancouver, their focus is to put pressure on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

“We are calling upon Justin to end the $18 billion of subsidies that he gives to very rich fossil fuel companies every single year. That’s taxpayer dollars that could be used for transitioning us to a green economy.”
He says while they hope to convince all levels of government to take action on climate change, they feel their message still isn’t getting through.
“We’re going to continue this until we do, and we’re never going to stop. We are completely dedicated to this cause. And we will continue to make sacrifices and we will continue to go to jail.”
