Royal BC Museum: Mammoths: Giants of the Ice Age @ Royal BC Museum
Jun 3 – Dec 31 all-day

Victoria’s Royal BC Museum presents Mammoths! Giants of the Ice Age, a remarkable exploration of the great creatures that roamed the Earth millions of years ago. Sometimes standing more than 14 feet tall, mammoths and mastodons towered over the lands of Europe, Asia and North America from as long ago as 1.8 million years in the past to as recently as 10,000 years ago, during the Ice Age. And now they’re coming to the Royal BC Museum.

This engaging, interactive exhibition tells the amazing story of the Ice Age in BC – and around the world. Explore how mammoths and mastodons lived with other giant creatures like short-faced bears and saber-toothed cats. Through a rich collection of fossils, casts, preserved flesh, immersive media and engaging interactives, visitors will discover the Proboscidean family tree, from woollies to mastodons to dwarves to modern-day elephants, immersed in a richly animated Ice Age panorama. Then for the first time ever in Canada, you will be able to see Lyuba, a 40,000 year-old baby woolly mammoth. Discovered in Siberia in 2007, Lyuba is the world’s most complete preserved mammoth. This is a remarkable opportunity for visitors to see an animal – now extinct – that once roamed across much of BC.

Zoom into Nano @ Science World
Sep 24 2016 @ 10:00 am – Jan 2 2017 @ 6:00 pm

Zoom into Nano

Explore Science World’s new feature exhibition Zoom into Nano, September 24, 2016 – January 2, 2017.

Zoom into Nano explores the world of nanoscience—a world that is too small to see with the naked eye. Nanoscience and engineering explore methods of manipulating materials on the molecular scale to create very, very small structures and devices. The exhibition lets you zoom into tiny structures and devices to see the amazing beauty of natural and manmade objects. Immerse yourself in models of atoms and molecules that are enlarged to 100 million times their actual size and check out the full body interactives!

Advances in nanotechnology are likely to change the way we design and fabricate almost everything—from faster computers and stain-repellent clothing, to new medicines to treat diseases and technologies that are beyond our wildest imaginations.

The Salvation Army Kettle Campaign
Nov 18 – Dec 25 all-day

Keep your eyes open for the Salvation Army volunteers this holiday season at more than 2000 kettle locations across Canada that support a wide variety of Salvation Army programs.

The Salvation Army Christmas Kettle Campaign is one of Canada’s largest and most recognizable annual charitable events. In addition to the critical fundraising impact of the Campaign, the Christmas Kettles boost the Army’s visibility and awareness.

For many Canadians, the Christmas Kettles are their only point of contact with The Salvation Army all year. According to public opinion polling, more than half of all Salvation Army donors list “giving to a Christmas Kettle” as their primary method of giving to The Salvation Army.

Furthermore, the Army relies on the co-operation of numerous retail partners to endure the ongoing success of this campaign. Continued goodwill from these retail partners is critical.

For all of these reasons, it is crucial that the Christmas Kettle Campaign be effectively and consistently managed across the country. The Salvation Army’s Christmas Kettle Campaign has raised funds for more than 120 years to meet its demand for services. The Campaign has grown into one of Canada’s most significant and recognizable annual charitable events.

Canada’s first kettle was used in St. John’s, Newfoundland, in 1906. Today, the familiar kettles and kettle workers (or ‘bell ringers’) are seen in more than 2,000 locations nationwide. For more than 100 years the annual Christmas Kettle Campaign has been a great way for people to help others in need in their local community through the work of The Salvation Army!

St. Paul’s Foundation invites the community to the Lights of Hope campaign. Join JACKfm on November 24th for an entire community celebration complete with fireworks, food trucks, choirs and a spectacular light display. The lights remain on display until Christmas 2016.

Every holiday season, the community is invited to support St. Paul’s greatest needs through the Lights of Hope campaign. Greatest needs may be small things, like new pyjamas for patients, blankets and blood pressure monitors, but they are things that give comfort and support when it’s needed most. And that means that even your smallest donation counts.

The annual Lights of Hope display takes six weeks to build by over 150 volunteers using donated materials. This 20 second time lapse shows the volunteers hard at work followed by our traditional fireworks show. The display features over 10km of lights, 100,000 bulbs and hundreds of sponsored stars and marks the beginning of the holiday season for many in our community. It is also our biggest fundraiser of the year and the patients at St. Paul’s appreciate your donation, large or small.
