Vigil at UBC in memory of 11 killed at Pittsburgh synagogue

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Staff and students at UBC are coming together Tuesday afternoon to mourn and honour the 11 victims of the Pittsburgh synagogue massacre.

Rabbi Philip Bregman with Hillel BC says many staff and students are heartbroken. “It’s something that hits at the heart and soul of Jews all over the world.”

Eleven people were killed in Saturday’s shooting at a synagogue in Pittsburgh during a baby naming ceremony. Robert Bowers, 46, has been charged in what’s believed to be the deadliest attack on Jews in U.S. history.

Though Bregman is sad, he’s not shocked. “Were we not standing in the street on West 8th about 22 months ago when six Muslims were slaughtered in a house of worship in Quebec City? Do we not see the constant gun violence that’s taking place mostly — but not exclusively — south of the border?”

“These individuals were murdered in a Jewish house of worship. We are [in] the main Jewish building, so to speak, on campus. So, it makes sense this commemoration and vigil would take place here.”

The vigil takes place at the UBC Hillel House at 4 p.m.
