Someone knows something in case of teen killed by stray bullet last year: VPD

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – More than a year and a half after a 15-year-old boy was killed by a stray bullet in Vancouver, police say they believe there are witnesses who aren’t talking.

Alfred Wong was shot and killed in January of 2018 when the car he was riding in with his family got caught up in a targeted shooting near East Broadway and Ontario Street.

Wong was placed on life support but died of his injuries two days later.

23-year-old Kevin Whiteside was also killed. Police believe he was in the area with the intent to kill Matthew Navas-Rivas, who was eating at a nearby restaurant. Navas-Rivas was not injured in the shooting, but was killed in an unrelated incident the following summer.

Another by-stander near the restaurant was injured when grazed by a bullet.

Despite having made no arrests so far, the Vancouver Police Department is pleased with the way the investigation has gone but needs details that could make a break in the case.

“We know there are people who have critical information who have refused to provide investigators with that information,” says Staff Sergeant Mike Heard.

In a statement, Wong’s mother, Chelly, calls on those with information to contact police, saying: “Without your help, the police may not be able to arrest the killer, and our son will not be able to lay in rest.”

Anyone who may have information about this murder is asked to contact detectives at 604-717-0515 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
