15 apps all parents should know about

As kids head back to school, there are 15 apps police are warning that every parent or guardian should know about. According to Abbotsford Police, there could be more behind the apps on a child’s cell phone than parents realize. Ashley Burr has more.

ABBOTSFORD (NEWS 1130) — It looks like a calculator app but it’s actually a place where kids can hide their photos, chats, and browser history from their parents.

It’s one of 15 apps police departments across North America are telling parents they need to know about.

The Abbotsford Police Department recently shared the list. Sergeant Judy Bird says as kids head back to class, parents should take some time to school  themselves on these apps.

“Young people are so adept at whipping through cell phones and getting where they need to go that sometimes the technology that continues to evolve becomes a little scary for us,” she says. “All you have to do is get online and just do a bit of research and you will be wiser as to what your young person’s getting involved with, and who they’re talking to.”

Abbotsford police explain that the campaign was launched by the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office, after a sting operation.

25 people were arrested for travelling to Florida to pay for sexual services from what they thought was a 14-year-old child.

“All of those arrested used one or more of the 15 apps to solicit a child for sex.  This campaign was launched to bring awareness to parents whose underage children may have unrestricted access to social media,” the department says.
