Happy ending for Houston: Dog rescued after fall into West Vancouver river

WEST VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — A couple were united with their dog–a one-year-old golden lab named Houston–Saturday morning after a scare in West Vancouver.

A crew was called to Cypress Falls Park, a popular spot for weekend dog walkers, around 11 a.m.

“On occasion, the dog gets away from the owner and ends up in a precarious spot there,” says Chief Martin LeDuc with West Vancouver Fire and Rescue.

“I wouldn’t say it’s typical in our day, but certainly we’ve been there for dog rescues and it’s always great when we have a good, positive outcome.”

Houston had scrambled to safety on a ledge after falling in the river.

“The dog sort of got away from them and slid down into the river and got washed down the river to a pool,” says Chief Martin LeDuc, adding one of the dog’s owners was down on the ledge keeping the pup company.

Rescuers used a specialized harness to lift the 80-pound dog to safety.

LeDuc confirms Houston was a very good boy throughout the ordeal.
